Custom Aquaculture Vaccines
Targeted, Sustainable Solutions for Fish Health
Kennebec River Biosciences develops custom autogenous vaccines that are strain-specific to the pathogens most recently isolated from your finfish. These vaccines are designed to match the exact challenges on your farm, helping you stay one step ahead of fast-changing threats to health and production.

Choosing Vaccines Over Medication
Healthy aquaculture depends on proactive choices. Antibiotics and antimicrobials can sometimes be necessary for rapid fish disease treatment, but overuse creates resistance and raises concerns for human health, water quality, and our ocean ecosystems.
Vaccination offers a sustainable alternative: preventing disease before it takes hold and reducing reliance on therapeutants. By investing in aquaculture vaccines, producers are rewarded with cleaner systems, more consistent profitability, and long-term aquaculture disease management.
What is an Autogenous Vaccine?
Autogenous vaccines are custom-made, developed from the specific bacterial or viral strains affecting your farm. Most KRB vaccines are bacterins, meaning they are made to prevent bacterial disease. KRB isolates and inactivates these pathogens, then formulates them into a vaccine tailored to your stock. As we’ve seen with human as well as animal health, pathogens evolve rapidly. Because our autogenous vaccines are built from the pathogens most recently identified at your facility, they can meet your evolving needs far better than commercial vaccines.

KRB’s vaccine production is designed for speed and precision. Once a pathogen is isolated, we can produce a targeted vaccine in as little as two weeks.
As the largest commercial fish health lab in the Americas, KRB offers rapid diagnostic turnaround that feeds directly into fast vaccine development. Our lab doesn’t wrap up its work with your first vaccine shipment—on the contrary, we continually monitor your fish health through ongoing biosurveillance and adjust formulations ensuring your vaccines are always current.
KRB provides a wide array of vaccines for fish including some of the most prevalent and the most uncommon species.
- Salmon
- Trout (all types)
- Tilapia
- Cobia
- Eel
- Yellowtail
- Snapper
- And more
KRB’s portfolio supports a wide range of aquaculture species. Autogenous bacterins are available in both the U.S. and for international export, while viral vaccines are currently limited to the U.S. market, under veterinary prescription. Our diagnostic work identifies the pathogens disrupting your production, and our custom vaccines are then built to protect against them with strain-specific precision. Veterinary Care for Immediate Needs
While vaccination is the strongest path to long-term health, KRB’s licensed veterinarians can also provide your aquatic animals with care for acute challenges. We can prescribe antibiotics or antimicrobials when immediate fish disease treatment is needed to stabilize a crisis.
This balanced approach ensures that your farm has both rapid intervention for present outbreaks and proactive management and vaccination strategies that minimize risk and reduce reliance on therapeutants over time.
